How to Clean a Bong, Dab Rig or Pipe

Resin builds up fast, and dirty glass tastes harsh and hits worse. The quick answer: for glass, a shake-and-rinse cleaner (or isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt) does most of the work in a few minutes; small parts go in a soak; a dab rig's banger gets swabbed while it is still warm. Below is how to clean each piece, which cleaner fits which material, and how to keep it from getting dirty in the first place. Everything we mention is on our Cleaning Supplies shelf.
Which cleaner for which piece
Match the cleaner to the material first. That one choice prevents most cleaning mistakes.

How to clean a bong, step by step
- Empty it. Dump the old water and pull the bowl and downstem out. They get cleaned separately. New pieces are on the Bongs & Water Pipes shelf.
- Rinse with warm water. Warm, not boiling. Boiling water, or cold water on hot glass, can crack it.
- Add the cleaner. Pour in Formula 420 Original or Bling G1. Formula 420 rates Bling as a one-minute clean with no soaking or scrubbing, and says it is for Pyrex, glass, metal, ceramic and quartz only.
- Cover the openings and shake. Plug the mouthpiece and the downstem hole with your hands or rubber plugs and shake hard so the liquid hits every surface.
- Rinse well with warm water until nothing smells of cleaner, then let it dry.
No cleaner on hand? The common home method is isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher) with coarse salt: the alcohol loosens resin and the salt scrubs it as you shake. It is the same steps as above. Rinse very thoroughly afterward, and keep alcohol away from plastic and acrylic.
The inside of a tube. A straight tube is hard to reach with a brush. The Pink Eraser Magnet Glass Cleaner puts one microfiber pad inside and one outside, held together by magnets, so both surfaces get wiped in one pass. The pads come off and go in the washing machine.
How to clean a bowl, downstem or other small pieces
Small parts clean better in a soak than a shake. Put them in a zip bag or container, cover them with Formula 420 S1 Soak N Rinse, let them sit, and rinse with water. Formula 420 makes S1 for exactly this: smaller items, where a soak works better than a shake. Randy's Orange Label Citrus Cleaner works the same way, and heavy buildup just takes longer. How to clean a dab rig and quartz banger
Wax and concentrate leave a sticky, oily residue that a flower cleaner struggles with. Formula 710 C2 is Formula 420's cleaner made for exactly that: wax and oil buildup on dab rigs, nails and bangers, safe on Pyrex, glass, metal, ceramic and quartz.
- After every dab, swab the banger while it is still warm (warm, not hot) with a cotton swab. Leftover concentrate wipes out easily now and bakes on if you leave it. This one habit saves most deep cleans.
- Change the rig water often. Rigs hold little water and it gets dirty fast.
- Deep clean: once the banger is fully cool, take it off and soak it, then shake the rig with C2 and rinse with warm water.
- Never put a cold swab or liquid on a red-hot banger. Sudden temperature change can crack quartz.

How to clean a glass pipe
Knock out the bowl, then push one of Randy's 10-inch tapered pipe cleaners through the stem to clear the airway. Bristle scrubs harder; Soft is gentler. How to clean a silicone or plastic piece
Use a cleaner made for the material. Formula 420 A4 is formulated for plastic, acrylic and silicone, as an alternative to isopropyl alcohol, which can crack or cloud acrylic. Add it, cover the openings, shake for about a minute, and rinse thoroughly with warm water. It comes in 12oz and 4oz.
How often should you clean a bong?
Change the water every day you use it, because old water is where most of the smell comes from. Give it a full clean about once a week with regular use, or sooner when you see buildup or the taste goes harsh. Small parts and bangers clean easiest when you keep up with them.
How to keep it clean longer
Two products go in your piece instead of tap water and keep resin from sticking to the glass:
- Piece Water Solution: a 12 fl oz, ready-to-use water replacement for bongs, rigs and bubblers. When it is time to change it, pour it out and rinse with tap water.
- Randy's Resin Guard: goes in place of tap water and helps keep buildup from sticking. It prevents buildup; it does not remove it, so start it on a piece you have just cleaned.
Quick answers
Can I use boiling water to clean a bong? No. Boiling water, or a fast change from hot to cold, can crack glass and quartz. Use warm water.
Is there a cleaner for silicone? Yes: Formula 420 A4 is made for plastic, acrylic and silicone.
What is the difference between Formula 420 and Formula 710? Formula 420 is for general pipe and glass cleaning. Formula 710 is made for concentrate residue on rigs, nails and bangers.
What is the fastest way to clean a bong? A shake-and-rinse cleaner like Bling G1: pour, shake for about a minute, rinse.
